Dr Hughes: Come in, Tom, Sara. So, how's the project on cycling to campus coming along? Have you settled on your methods yet?
Tom: We think so. We're planning to combine an online survey with a set of interviews.
Sara: Right. The survey gives us the numbers — how many people cycle, how far, and so on — and the interviews let us dig into why people choose to cycle, or why they don't.
Dr Hughes: Good. A mixed-methods approach makes a lot of sense here. Now, have you thought carefully about your sample? A very common mistake is to only survey people who already cycle.
Sara: Yes, we talked about exactly that. If we only ask cyclists, we'll miss the whole point — we really need to hear from people who've given up cycling, or who've never started.
Dr Hughes: Precisely. So make sure you recruit widely.
Tom: We were actually going to hand out flyers at the bike racks, but you're right, that would completely bias the sample. So we'll advertise through the whole student email list instead.
Dr Hughes: Much better. That way you reach cyclists and non-cyclists alike. Now, let's divide up the work. Who's going to do what?
Sara: Well, I'll design the survey questions — that's honestly the part I enjoy most.
Tom: And I'll set up and run the interviews, and do the transcribing afterwards. I've done interviewing before, so it makes sense for me to take that on.
Sara: The one thing is the statistics. Neither of us is very confident with the numbers side of it.
Dr Hughes: That's absolutely fine — I'll run the statistical analysis together with you in our weekly sessions, so leave that part to me for now. You two focus on collecting good data.
Tom: That's a relief. Thanks, Dr Hughes.
