Sam: Good afternoon, Swiftlink Broadband technical support, Sam speaking. How can I help?
Fiona: Hi. My internet has been down since this morning and I really need it working — I work from home.
Sam: I'm sorry to hear that, let's get it sorted. First, could I take the name on the account?
Fiona: Yes, it's Fiona Macleod.
Sam: And how do you spell the surname?
Fiona: It's M-A-C-L-E-O-D. Macleod. One word, no space.
Sam: Thank you. Do you have your account number to hand? It's on your bill.
Fiona: Yes, it's nine-four-two, six-one-eight, oh-five. So 942 618 05.
Sam: Got it — account nine-four-two, six-one-eight, zero-five. Now, can you tell me what the lights on the router are doing?
Fiona: The power light is green, but the broadband light is flashing red — it's usually a steady blue.
Sam: A flashing red broadband light usually means there's no connection on the line. Have you tried turning the router off and on again?
Fiona: Yes, twice. I switched it off at the wall, waited a minute, and switched it back on. No change.
Sam: Okay, thank you for trying that. I can see there's actually a known fault affecting your area — a damaged cable near your exchange. Our engineers are already working on it.
Fiona: Oh, that's a relief in a way. When will it be fixed?
Sam: The estimate is that service will be restored by six o'clock this evening — actually, let me update that, the latest note says by eight o'clock tonight. I do apologise for the delay.
Fiona: By eight this evening, all right. Is there anything I can do in the meantime? I've got a video call at four.
Sam: For today, I'd suggest using your mobile as a hotspot for that call. And as a gesture of goodwill, I'll add a credit of ten pounds to your next bill for the inconvenience.
Fiona: That's very kind, thank you.
Sam: You're welcome. I'll log this as fault reference F, then five-two-nine-zero, so F5290. If it's still not working after eight, please call back and quote that. We'll also send you a text the moment the line is back up.
